Hi
Perfect weather for me, not too warm and not too wet, hopefully it will be perfect gardening weather too. A bit of rain due next week but that will keep the gardens damp and growing, so not the end of the world. Hoping that sales keep rolling along over the next few weeks as we have plenty of stock still coming on line including quite a bit of impulse flowering stock.
Some of the new lines we are trying out this year have been really good, the Gaillardia Guapa range so far has produced lovely chunky plants which plenty of strength in them as well as good flower presentation and colour. Much improved on some of the other ranges we have tried in the past. The Coreopsis Uptick looks very promising too with great habit again and lovely colour combinations, I was a bit slow trying these out but I'm catching up fast! I also managed to order enough Nemesia Wisley Vanilla this year having grossly underestimated demand over the last few years. The pretty flowers combined with that amazing vanilla scent is just captivating. Overall I am still a bit anxious I may have got over excited when ordering modules back in the autumn, but so far very little has been unsold and the local fetes and charity groups have benefitted from any excess. Fete season is in full swing now with multiple local requests for donations each week, but it's nice to see that excess going to an appreciative audience rather than on the compost heap. Rabbits are still causing a few headaches despite numbers being knocked back on a fairly regular basis, we will have to reinforce the fencing this winter and try to reduce the incomers as the damage is a real pain in the pot.
Van saga's continue with three out of five in the garage this week, two of them all week. The long running 5 month issue with one reappeared after one day back from the garage, and we won't see it back again for another week or two. What fun. Mega wedding last weekend, a multicultural affair with fantastic food and music, with a drumming band, rock band and disco as well as Bollywood style dance routines. Don't ask how, but I managed to become 'keeper of the plunger' during the meal, helping to keep the pipes moving in the mobile facilities, before I managed to pass on to the baton to the catering team!
Availability list.
Summer Agapanthus are now making strong growth, Double Diamond is in bud and there are odd buds on several others. Digitalis Dottie is a very compact range of foxgloves, even shorter than the Dalmation series and coming into bud now.
We are trying out another new range of Coreopsis this summer. Three colour forms of Coreopsis Uptick, strong, compact and bushy with bright standout bicolor flowers. With such a long flowering period it looks like a winner to me. Fresh crops of Erigeron karv. Stallone with its tiny multicolour daisy flowers that come all summer long are back on the list.
Salvia's of all sorts are now growing strongly and producing the first of many flowers. Fresh batches of Scabious are coming on line again, some in bud already and the others very close behind. Sanguisorba Tanna is throwing up lots of bud. Attractive foliage and subtle flowers make it a classic garden plant. Sunshine yellow flowers of Euryops chrysanthemoides are beginning to open, another all summer performer.
Masses of bud and colour to come with the Bidens summer range. Already making an eye catching show they look fab.The earliest batches of Dianthus are producing flower stems and tight bud. All are scented varieties and very bushy. Fresh batches of Aquilegia have been saved from the bunnies or deer and now looking great with bud and flower activity. The hardy Osteospermum Tresco Purple are in bud. Excellent bushy stock with buds fattening.
Armeria Dreameria series of long season flowering Armerias are now showing their first colour with loads more to come. No white this year but a series of three pretty different pinks making a delightful show. The more standard classic Sea Thrift Armeria maritima are also showing bud too above fresh new growth. Nemesia Wisley Vanilla is back on the list and in flower. Delightful heady vanilla scent as you walk anywhere near it. The compact Achillea Milly Rock series are now in bud. Strong growers but short in stature.
Summer colour is on its way with the Gaura range doing it's thing. Hoping to have a good run of availability over the next few months but they are selling so fast there may be the odd short break. The Gaillardia Guapa series we are trying out are looking great. Strong and compact the first buds are already out. Many of the Leucanthemums are coming into strong bud now. The scrambling Campanula posharskyana is chunky and now producing plenty of bud and Campanula carpatica has its first buds appearing
Rhodanthemum's are also in bud, ready to flower all summer long. We have short bushy Erysimum Cheers Florange in bud, a clear pale orange flower, really attractive and scented. Multiple Hosta varieties are looking great. All propagated in our own micro-prop lab, we have a super selection. Favourite border classics Verbena bonariensis and Lollipop are back on line. I have several batches on the way so we can keep the plant size in the pot manageable.
Best wishes from all at Kirton Farm Nurseries.
